Read about the tremendous impact that Ecojustice supporters have had on the environment — and the work that lies ahead.
Ecojustice is a stronger, more powerful environmental defender because of the many supporters who stand with us to create a brighter environmental future.
Together, we achieved many environmental victories this past year. Here’s a snapshot of your tremendous impact:
- You empowered concerned citizens with the legal support needed to stop the expansion of U.S. coal exports through Canadian ports.
- You backed Ecojustice’s successful intervention victory at the Supreme Court of Canada that set a national precedent that says bankrupt polluters must clean up the environment before paying back their creditors.
- You gave wild salmon a voice and helped Ecojustice win a precedent-setting lawsuit that confirms the federal government must protect the health of wild salmon.
- You helped establish a landmark precedent that says the federal government cannot legally approve a project — in this case, the Trans Mountain pipeline — based on a flawed environmental assessment.
These victories are a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together. To learn more about your impact, check out our online victories report here.
Big challenges lie ahead. So far, Canada has missed every climate target it has ever set, lags behind other nations in recognizing your right to a healthy environment, and has failed to act with the urgency needed to stop wildlife loss. We are committed to using the power of the law to right these wrongs.
As another federal election gets underway, we call on all parties to remember that Canadians expect our government to have a credible climate platform that reflects the urgency and resolve that this humanitarian challenge demands — and to implement the federal Species at Risk Act to its fullest extent to protect Canada’s biological wealth for our children and future generations.
Should the incoming government fail to rise to that challenge, Ecojustice stands ready to go to court to give voice to nature and impacted communities, knowing that the seeds of change lie in our collective power.
With you on our side, Ecojustice remains fierce in our optimism for the future.
The Fridays for Future strikes, inspired by the courage of 16-year-old Greta Thunberg of Sweden, demonstrate that great mobilization on behalf of the earth is underway and gaining momentum.
Ecojustice’s unique offering to this movement here in Canada is our legal expertise. But the seeds of change lie in our collective power. So we thank you for standing with us at this pivotal moment in time.
With you as our partner, Ecojustice will take on more bold legal action to protect this living planet for today’s young people and future generations.
