Over the first half of Kurt’s long legal career, he practiced civil litigation with an emphasis on oil and gas, employment and insurance defence law.
More recently, Kurt acted as Board Counsel to two Alberta regulatory tribunals, the Natural Resources Conservation Board and the Energy Resources Conservation Board (now the Alberta Energy Regulator). He advised the Boards on administrative, regulatory, environmental, aboriginal and constitutional law and represented the Boards in numerous hearings and subsequent appeals.
Most recently, Kurt served the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, home to the Athabasca Oil Sands, reviewing environmental impact assessments and applications of developers for approvals. He also engaged in the regulatory processes for oil sands, pipeline and electrical transmission developments and in consultation with industrial developers with a view to mitigating the negative impacts of industrial development.
