MEDIA RELEASE – The federal government is missing legal deadlines for recovery planning for Canada’s endangered species. On June 5, 2006, the government missed a deadline under Canada’s Species at Risk Act for preparing recovery plans for over 105 endangered species including the critically threatened Northern spotted owl, whooping crane, swift fox and Vancouver Island marmot.

MEDIA RELEASE – A coalition of environmental groups today served Federal Environment Minister Rona Ambrose with a petition giving her 60 days to step in to protect two endangered plants in Alberta or face a lawsuit. Alberta Wilderness Association, Federation of Alberta Naturalists, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Sierra Club of Canada and Nature Canada, represented by Sierra Legal Defence Fund, are threatening the suit to test the federal government’s intention to protect Canada’s endangered wildlife.


KI wins huge victory over Ontario mining company

In May, KI had launched a lawsuit to counter a $10 billion lawsuit filed against them by an Ontario mineral exploration company, Platinex Inc (TSXV:PTX), that wants to exploit platinum deposits located within KI’s traditional territory. MEDIA RELEASE – Five of Canada’s most respected environmental groups are headed back to federal court to challenge Environment Minister Rona Ambrose’s refusal to protect Canada’s most endangered bird, the Northern spotted owl, under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). The groups have filed an application for a judicial review of the Minister’s decision and are seeking a court order to overturn it.
