Deborah Curran is the Hakai Professor in Environmental Law and Sustainability at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law. She teaches courses relating to land and water law (municipal, real estate, the environmental law clinic and water law), and facilitates a unique field course in environmental law in the Central Coast at the Hakai Beach Institute on Calvert Island. As a Program Director with the Environmental Law Centre at UVic, she supervises students working on environmental law projects for community organizations and First Nations across the province. For over fifteen years she has worked with local governments and community organizations to develop legal strategies for smart growth and sustainability. She is the author of the Green Bylaws Toolkit and Smart Bylaws Guide website, and she co-founded Smart Growth B.C.
