Our homes are sacred spaces. They are where we make memories, where we raise families and entertain friends. It’s where we go to recharge and get away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
At Ecojustice, we know the value of a peaceful, happy abode. That’s why we’re taking action against Lilydale, which runs a chicken-processing plant in Calgary that is interfering with local residents’ ability to enjoy their homes.
We filed a statement of claim last week outlining complaints over noise levels, odour control, improper waste storage — including raw chicken parts — and a 2009 ammonia spill that forced several residents from their homes.
“It’s difficult to invite guests over for a barbeque when you don’t know if the plant is going to smell like a garbage dump or if you are going to find a chicken head in your backyard,” said resident Todd Ford.
Last Thursday, Alberta Environment laid charges against Lilydale for the ammonia spill, but the residents still seek a court order that will limit disruptive activities at the plant.
Our earlier work on this file led Alberta Health Services to order Lilydale to implement better waste storage methods in 2010, but local residents continue to have their lives disrupted, making further legal action necessary.
