I’m Elaine, and I know firsthand the impact your support has in holding Canadian governments and polluters to account.

I grew up at what was once the semi-rural edge of Mississauga, Ont., where I explored local creeks and woodlots, fishing for minnows and climbing tall trees. But my childhood stomping grounds have long been lost to urbanization and the pollution and environmental degradation that so often goes with it.

Witnessing the impacts pollution and toxic chemicals have had on our health and the environment is why I dedicated my career to defending the land, air, and water that sustains us. The reality is, our laws are failing to protect us.

My holiday wish is for a modernized Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) that safeguards human health and the environment from toxic pollution.

Canada’s main toxic law, CEPA, hasn’t been updated for almost two decades. To say it’s outdated and in need of an overhaul is an understatement. Fortunately, the federal government is reviewing CEPA right now. And we’re working hard to make sure it delivers a strong law that’s in step with the times.

Your support made it possible for me to testify before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Sustainable Development in 2016. I urged it to update CEPA by improving oversight of toxic substances and ensuring equal protection for all. In June, the committee called for sweeping legislative reforms. We were encouraged to see our recommendations for stronger toxics regulation, protection for vulnerable populations, and recognition of the right to a healthy environment included.

Thousands of supporters like you have helped us get this far. In the new year, we expect to see new legislation tabled, and we’ll be hustling hard to make sure it delivers the reforms we so desperately need. Please donate today to help us sustain our momentum at this critical time.

Happy holidays!

P.S. Ecojustice aims to raise $200,000 before January 1st to support this and other litigation and law reform efforts. When you donate this holiday season, you’ll help build the case for a better earth and turn our wishes into reality.
