‘60s student activism and climate. What’s the link?

My name is Gail. My partner Lynda and I have been Ecojustice supporters since 1993. I’ve also worked in avalanche control, and each year I grow more alarmed by the receding ice in the mountains near my home in B.C.

The glaciers I’ve known for most of my adult life are disappearing before my eyes. There’s no doubt that climate change is to blame. In fact, scientists tell us Canada is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world.

Lynda and I worry about what the Canada of tomorrow will look like for the children of today, and the children who come after them.

Then we think about the progress Ecojustice has made. For nearly 30 years, they’ve been winning cases that protect the air, land, and water we all depend on.

That’s why Lynda and I are making an all-important investment: We’re going to match — dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000 — every gift you make to this incredible organization from now until June 27.

My activism was awakened in the late 1960s during student-led opposition to the Vietnam War. After the Kent State shooting, young people were devastated and enraged. We funneled that energy into organizing nationwide school strikes to pressure politicians to end the war.

Today, young people here in Canada — and around the world — are organizing to voice their outrage over government inaction on climate change. Our house is on fire, they remind us, and the grown-ups in power are failing to respond with the urgency the climate crisis demands.

One of the most powerful ways you and I can take action to ensure a safe climate and livable future is by supporting Ecojustice.

With so much at stake, there is no organization Lynda and I trust more to lead the legal fight against climate change.

We don’t have children of our own, but we’re deeply committed to protecting the climate for children everywhere who will be left to grapple with unprecedented threats to their health, security, and wellbeing.

Please, join us in the fight to respond to our climate emergency by making a gift to Ecojustice today. Remember, we’ll match your donation, dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000.
