Brampton incinerator halted

Concerned citizens in Brampton,Ontario derailed controversial plans to burn radioactive waste at an incinerator in their community

September 2006

Concerned citizens in Brampton,Ontario derailed controversial plans to burn radioactive waste at an incinerator in their community in 2006.

A company had applied to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to burn radioactive waste in its Brampton facility, but local residents and the city opposed the plan. Ecojustice provided assistance to local group People Against Radioactive Contamination.

In June, the company announced that it was withdrawing its proposal and would also drop its legal challenge of Brampton’s bylaw banning new incinerators – just days before scheduled hearings before the Ontario Municipal Board.

That same month the company was ordered to halt all operations at the plant for numerous fire code violations and inadequate environmental and human health protections after two fires at the facility.

Shortly before this development, Ecojustice had called for the CNSC to step up its enforcement of fire code provisions at radioactive fuel processing facilities in the community of Port Hope, Ontario.
