When the going gets tough…

The signs of spring are beginning to show and each day we are given a little more reason to step out and enjoy the sun. But as the trees and trails around me come back to life, it’s hard to ignore what a tough winter we’ve endured. I don’t mean merely the deep freeze that chilled Ontario or the holiday blizzards that buried the West Coast. To me it seems the global financial crisis struck the hardest blow of the season.

Many Canadians watched their savings, property values and job security dwindle. Putting money aside for non-profit groups required a whole new level of dedication. How grateful I feel to have donors like you stand by your commitment to us and the environment. While we have experienced a drop in support, we are tackling this head-on by cutting costs while preserving our people and our work. The result: we are faring much better than many of our environmental counterparts. More than that, we continue our role as one of Canada’s leading environmental organizations. Indeed, it is because of you that we bring you news of an outstanding string of victories.

As you’ll read inside, we’ve shielded an Ontario community from a cement company’s plan to burn toxic material, we’ve helped families burdened by industrial air pollution in Quebec secure $15 million worth of damages, and in the case of a BC mining project that would turn a pristine waterway into a tailings dump, we’ve been given the rare opportunity to make an appeal before the Supreme Court of Canada.

We haven’t stopped pushing ourselves to achieve more. We recently launched a team of two lawyers in Alberta to tackle some of Canada’s greatest environmental challenges. We also made our first foray into the world of blogging by launching an Ecojustice blog. Here you’ll find regular updates on our work, learn fun tidbits about our team, and keep posted on environmental news. We invite you to check it out at blog.ecojustice.ca.
