Organic Farming and GMOs

Dec 10, 2009 03:28 PM

Status: In Progress

In 2006 we attempted to intervene in case against inventors/distributors of genetically modified canola, which organic farmers alleged had contaminated their farms. Our intervention was refused, and the plaintiffs unsuccessful but they have since sought leave to the Supreme Court of Canada and, if granted, we will intervene.

In 2006 we attempted to intervene in Hoffman v. Monsanto, in which organic farmers sought class action certification against Monsanto and Bayer, the inventors/distributors of genetically modified (GM) canola.  The organic farmers alleged their farms had been contaminated by GM canola.

Although our intervention was refused, we assisted the plaintiffs who were unsuccessful at appeal.  They have since sought leave to the SCC and, if leave is granted, we will intervene and are preparing materials in cooperation with academics at the University of Ottawa.
