Oil and Gas Subsidies Complaints

Ecojustice demands Canada eliminate billions in tax breaks for booming oil and gas companies
In October 2005, Ecojustice filed a petition with the Auditor General of Canada demanding an investigation into billions of dollars of federal subsidies to the oil and gas industry. The petition highlighted federal tax breaks and other subsidies that promote one of the country's largest sources of greenhouse gas pollution and virtually cancel out spending on Canada's effort to meet its emission reduction target under the Kyoto Protocol.
In early 2007, we made submissions to the House Finance Committee on this issue. In March 2007, Finance Minister Flaherty announced the phase out of the ACCA subsidy, but not beginning until 2011.
We continue to call on the Auditor General to further investigate the subsidies and make an in-depth report to Parliament. In November 2007 we filed a second petition in coordination with KAIROS (Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives), which also submitted a complaint concerning the issue.
