Ecojustice Senior Scientist: Dr. Elaine MacDonald

Elaine MacDonald began her career at Ecojustice as a scientific investigator in 1999. She is now Ecojustice’s senior scientist and a leading authority on pollution and its effect on health.

She authored the groundbreaking Great Lakes Sewage Report Card, and continued that leading work on responsible waste water management in Ontario by using sound science to work for green infrastructure and stronger waste water standards for all municipalities. She has also been an outspoken advocate at the national level for a ban of toxic fire retardants.
 
Elaine authored the report “Exposing Canada’s Chemical Valley”, a report on one of Canada’s most polluted communties. She is currently advocating for the strengthening of Ontario’s air pollution laws to improve air quality and reduce pollution in industrial hotspots.
 
Elaine graduated with a geo-engineering degree in 1990, and worked as a consultant on environmental projects before enrolling in McGill University, where she obtained a graduate diploma in waste management and groundwater contamination, and MSc and PhD degrees in geo-environmental engineering.
 
Elaine lives in Toronto with her partner Stephane and her two daughters.
